Born in 1951, Dr Mieczysław Kominek is a musicologist and sound engineer by education. He worked as a music director and culture reporter for Polish Radio, wrote for Ruch Muzyczny and Tygodnik Powszechny, and founded and led Studio magazine (1992-99). From 2009 to 2013 he was the president of the Polskie Nagrania recording company. In 2001 he created the Polish Music Information Centre (POLMIC), becoming its director.

He has been a member of the Polish Composers' Union since 1973 and its president since 2015. He is also a member of the Polish Society for Contemporary Music and the Witold Lutosławski Society. From 2005- to 2009 he was a member of the Board of the International Association of Music Information Centres IAMIC.
